One of the 7 historical designations of origin in Catalonia, DO Terra Alta, is the southernmost Catalan winemaking area. It’s situated between the River Ebro and the lands of Matarraña in Aragon. Its geographic position offers great landscape value.
Not surprisingly, the Tierras del Ebro region has been recognised by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve with incredible winemaking potential. There is evidence dating back to the 17th century of a cultivated field in Gandesa known as vernatxa. Nowadays, 33% of the world’s white garnacha grapes are grown in Terra Alta. This percentage accounts for 75% of the production in Spain and 90% of the white garnacha grapes in Catalonia. DO Terra Alta is no doubt the soul of white garnacha. Such is the case that there is a specific 100% white garnacha control label.
DO Terra Alta offers fine wines which stand out because of their power and character. A Terra Alta takes root in calcareous soils, grows under the Mediterranean sun and is made with great care.
The differentiating features of its wines are mainly due to the Mediterranean terroir and predominance of traditional grape varieties which, along with the native varieties, mark their character. The uniqueness which can be sensed in all DO Terra Alta wines is this Meditterraneaness, greater expression in the mouth than under the nose, and an outstanding persistence in taste
Its white wines are pale with a fresh aroma, offering a broad and balanced passage through the mouth. They’re mostly produced with white garnacha grapes. The importance of the garnacha grape variety and the specific culture of how they are handled in winemaking mean these wines best express the terroir and culture of DO Terra Alta, and make them worthy of a specific guarantee label—Terra Alta Garnatxa Blanca 100X100. Its red wines are known for their Mediterranean character with great colour intensity and a predominance of fruity aromas.
Their singularity and quality are complemented with 4 types of liqueur wines: natural sweet wines, white and red fortified mistela in addition to aged fortified rancio wines. All of them are made with garnacha grapes which have been overripened by the natural action of the north wind that blows in autumn.
