The production area of the Empordà DO, located in the far north east of Catalonia, encapsulates 55 municipalities spread across two districts. Empordà has two geographically distinct areas: Alt Empordà with 35 municipalities and Baix Empordà with 20.

Empordà is a landscape of contrasts. The Pyrenees, to the north, and the Mediterranean Sea, to the south, form natural boundaries. The breathtaking Costa Brava setting makes Empordà a truly unique place, linking the coast to the mountains, influenced by the famous northerly Tramontane wind.

Native varieties with a lot of history

The Empordà is the land of carinyenes and garnatxes, the soul of the Empordà vineyard. Today, native varieties are the most planted in the appellation with two out of three strains. The percentage of these varieties has not stopped growing in recent years thanks to the determined bet of the Empordà winegrowers especially for garnatxes and carinyenes, but also for macabeu or moscatell and the historic Empordà monestrell. Empordà is also a wine-growing area with a unique varietal richness in being one of the few denominations that produces all the carinyenes and garnatxes varieties.

The spirit of a people

The Emporda wineries are mostly small family farms with a long tradition in the management of the vineyards and the production of wines.

A new generation of winegrowers and oenologists, with good education and training, has been leading the new wine projects in the Empordà for years, combining traditional knowledge with the most modern techniques to create unique wines with personality that match the landscape and the Empordà character.

Like their wines, the winemakers of the Empordà are people ‘touched’ by the Tramuntana. The north wind forges and marks its personality. They are men and women of free spirit, passionate, creative and with great determination
