Since 1995, it has been protecting and grouping together the wineries and wines produced in the counties of Bages and a part of Moianès, all of them family-owned and with their own vineyards.
Set in the heart of Catalonia and close to Barcelona, the Pla de Bages Designation of Origin lies between the mountainous landscape of Montserrat, the Serra de Castelltallat and the natural park of Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac. A unique terrain dotted with small vineyards, surrounded by woodland and teeming with an amazing biodiversity which leaves a lasting impression on all the wines produced there
The Bages has a long tradition of winemaking. Some say it takes its name from Bacchus, the pagan god of wine. Wine cellars carved into stone, Mediaeval winepresses and the Sant Benet de Bages Monastery all attest to a glorious past which has shaped the identity and character of the people as well as the landscape.
Dry stone huts, vats and walls all form part of this winemaking patrimony, which is now listed as an intangible heritage site and a UNESCO Global Geopark. This region used to boast the largest expanse of vineyards in the whole of Catalonia, it was home to some 27,700 hectares before the arrival of the grape phylloxera.
The Picapoll variety is the most emblematic indigenous grape in the area, giving it a distinct character. Through the cultivation, preservation and study of local varieties such as the Mandó and the Sumoll, the roots of the past are able to inspire the vision of the future.
Today, Pla de Bages DO Wine Route, provides you the opportunity to discover the history, heritage and landscape, as well as the wineries and wines of the region through a cultural wine tourism route with more than 30 wine experiences and establishments.
